Under the Sea

IBTWYPDBA few years ago, I got to play with underwater housing for my old Ixus. I’ve upgraded to a DSLR since then, but since the housing for my camera is so damn expensive, I’ve put my dreams of shooting underwater on hold.

Yesterday, however, I got my chance to do just that. Nope, I didn’t buy any new gear - instead, I visited the Manila Ocean Park. Technically, I was underwater, and my housing was the whole aquarium.

It was a tiring shoot, but still nothing like the hectic weekend I had a few weeks ago. Still, all the waiting in line is still affecting me today.

I’m sure you don’t want to hear about my sorry state though. Instead, you want to see more images (including the one you see up top). Hit the jump to see them.

  1. i hate you elber! your shots are too fantastic. how do you deal with the glass glare? :)

btw, how was the park experience? is it worth going to even if its not completely finished?

    The feeling’s mutual. :D

I didn’t really have too much of a problem with glass glare - I just shot from an angle a few steps away, or got really close to the glass. The lighting also helped - the aquariums are well lit, while the viewing area is relatively dark. On another note, I’m not sure, but the fact that I used an 85mm might have helped - it might have been narrow enough to keep stray reflections out of the frame.

If you want answers to your 2nd and 3rd questions, head on over to this post at the DPP forum as well as my comment in the same thread.

  3. Really cool shots, man.

  4. Bryan:
Thanks! I’m glad you like them… unlike some haters here… :D
